On Wednesday 12th October 2011, Metolong Authority signed two contracts for construction of the Downstream Conveyance System.
Contract 1, which represents the pipeline to Maseru, was signed with UNIK Construction Engineering (Pty) Ltd. The contract which is valued at 377, 692, 404.11 Maloti (USD 47, 212, 000) is funded by the European Investment Bank.
Contract 2, which represents the pipelines to Roma, Mazenod and Morija was signed with WBHO Construction (Pty) Ltd. The contract which is valued at 265, 131, 961.84 Maloti (USD 33, 141, 500) is also funded by the European Investment Bank.
Construction of the Metolong Downstream Conveyance System represents a major milestone in the realisation of the Metolong Dam and Water Supply Programme. The Conveyance System will enable transmission of up to 93.4Ml/day potable water from the Metolong Water Treatment Plant into the Water and Sewage Company (WASCo) network, therefore enhancing the much-needed water supply for domestic and industrial use for Maseru and the surrounding towns.
In addition to the European Investment Bank, the Metolong Programme is co-funded by the Government of Lesotho and other development funders comprising the Government of South Africa, the World Bank, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Arab Fund for Economic Development in Africa and the Abu Dhabi Fund or Development.
The signing ceremony, which was overseen by the Honourable Minister of Natural Resources Mr. Monyane Moleleki, took place at Maseru Sun Hotel.
