On Thursday 10th March 2011, Metolong Authority signed a six months contract with Unik Construction Engineering (Pty) Ltd for civil works which comprise construction of roads and storm water drainage, water distribution and sewer reticulation and wastewater treatment plant within the Metolong project operations facility. The construction is funded by the Government of the Republic of South Africa to the tune of just over 23 million Maloti.
According to Dr. Idris Mahmoud, Chief Executive Officer of Metolong Authority, signing this contract is a major milestone for the Metolong Dam and Water Supply Programme (MDWSP), as it will ensure availability of appropriate infrastructure prior to the construction of the operations facility building works and the establishment of major Metolong programme contracts which are the Dam, Water Treatment Plant and the Downstream Conveyance System.
The Metolong Authority has already signed two other operations facility contracts with one Lesotho based contractor, Lesotho Steel Products and another South African based contractor, Rumdel Construction for the construction of the electrical works and the road linking the Metolong dam area with the Mohale road on the southern part of the dam site, respectively. The contracts are funded by the RSA government and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Through the MDWSP, the Government of Lesotho is aiming to secure long-term reliable water for the capital city of Maseru and the surrounding towns of Roma, Mazenod, Morija and Teyateyaneng. The programme is co-funded by the Government of Lesotho, the Government of South Africa, the World Bank, Kuwait Fund, BADEA, Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the European Investment Bank.
