Metolong Authority appoints new Chief Executive

The Board of Directors of Metolong Authority has appointed Dr. Idris Ahmed Mahmoud as the new Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Mahmoud is currently rendering engineering technical assistance to the Chief Executive Officer of the Water and Sewage Company (WASCO). He will officially take up his new role from the 1st February 2011 for a period of 3 years.

Dr. Mahmoud is a hydraulic, water and waste water Engineer. He started his professional career as a University Professor followed by over 30 years in Project Management with various Arab, African and Afro Arab Development Financing Institutions such as the African Development Bank, Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the ARAB Fund for Economic and Social Development.

The Metolong Dam and Water Supply Programme is not new to Dr. Mahmoud. He has been involved with the programme since its inception at the feasibility study stage. He was the Engineer in the Joint Mission of the Arab Financing Institutions that came to Lesotho to appraise the programme. He has also been involved in the subsequent stages of pre-implementation.

“I am delighted to be joining the Metolong Authority at this critical stage where major contracts such as the Metolong Dam contract are in the process of being awarded. The Lesotho Government’s vision of securing a reliable water supply for the lowland areas of the country is about to be realised and it will be an honour to see this programme through “said Dr. Mahmoud.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Mosito Khethisa, Dr. Mahmoud brings with him a wealth of experience in dam engineering, donor coordination and mobilisation. “We are happy to welcome him in our midst and we are confident that his skills and experience will enable him to lead the programme to the next level which is the implementation stage” said Mr. Khethisa.

The Metolong Dam and Water Supply Programme is an initiative by the Lesotho Government to supply potable water for domestic and industrial use to Maseru and the surrounding towns of Roma, Mazenod, Morija and Teyateyaneng by 2013.
